I rested my head in my hands, trying to focus on the soothing sound of the water in Ma'at's pools. Apparently, the goddess herself wasn't around, which was odd to say the least, but the priestess who'd been with us before had let me in and brought me back here. It surprised me that Ma'at gave one of her followers so much power, but Edrice seemed nice enough. She'd even brought me a tray of lemon water and fruits before disappearing to leave me alone.

I swished the water with my feet. I probably shouldn't be sat on the side of the pool with my feet dangling in, but it had felt right in the moment and was certainly helping my emotions stay in check. Which was something at least. My anger and sadness over my father's revelations were both still bubbling in my gut, but Ma'at's private sanctum was helping keep them at bay.

A knock sounded, and I looked up, confused by where it could be coming from. The door between me and the main room was made of metal and wouldn't be making that sound no matter who was hitting on it with what.

"Can I come in?" Fet asked. He stood at what I guessed counted as the entrance to this pooled area, though it would be a little overkill to call it a doorway. The whole place was open plan with canopies over the individual shallow pools. It wasn't what I'd expected from Ma'at's inner sanctum, but now I'd spent some time in it, I'd started to understand the appeal. The trickling water and the fragrant perfumes added a soothingness to the whole area that was difficult to ignore.

If I chose to stay at the temple, then I'd be putting something like this in my own area too.

"Be my guest." I waved towards the empty benches surrounding the water.

He ignored them and came to sit beside me, slipping off his sandals and kicking his feet in the water too.

"This is nice," he observed.

"Yes," I admitted. "I'm going to have one built." It had been a passing thought just moments ago, and yet now Fet was here, me staying at the temple felt like a certainty. I wasn't sure how that worked. Maybe I was imprinting on him because he'd been the one that saved me.

"I think that's a good idea."

We both stayed silent, watching the ripples in the water. Maybe I should have picked one of the pools with fish in it to sit by, then at least I'd have had something to watch other than my own feet.

"How are you feeling?" he asked eventually.

"Drained," I answered honestly. "How much of what he said did you know?" I wasn't sure why that was important to me, but it was.

"Not much. I knew that Mafdet asked him to call off the search, but your father's response was to ask me to go about it more discreetly. He never actually gave up on you, even though it might look like it.
